By Joe, Is that Coffee in your Whiskey Flask?
We all know that there are difference between men and women, and never are these differences more painfully obvious than when planning a wedding. Us guys think “wedding” and we think bachelor party, bachelor gifts and our wedding night – our thinking and planning with regards to the wedding ends there.
We don’t think about flowers or if we should go with fondant or butter cream frosting or if Aunt Selma should sit next to so-and-so because they were both elementary school teachers and might have a lot to talk about. None of this crosses our minds in the slightest.
My bride-to-be (thankfully) understands this about me and has largely let me off the hook. Now don’t get me wrong, I still go to all the food and cake tastings, but my input is limited to “Mmm. Cake good. Steak good. …Chicken good too. Me like butter cream, fondant taste like paste.”
Apparently my opinions were not as important (or perhaps helpful) as she was hoping, so I was directed to work on choosing gifts for my groomsmen. As any red blooded guy out will know, a typical groomsmen gift is a flask. Most brides think these are for decoration—they are not, all us guys “christen” these flasks the night before during the bachelor party.
After excitedly going through gift catalogs and picking out the perfect flasks that would hold a decent amount of whiskey and then running to tell my fiancé how and why these were so perfect, I was given specific instructions that if I was going to give my guys whiskey flasks, that everyone had better show up the next day without a hangover. Now that was a promise I couldn’t make.
What to do? Well, then it hit me, I decided that I would order these most awesome flasks, but on the day of the wedding I would fill them with coffee. Sheer genius. Even my fiancé liked the idea. She liked it so much that she ordered several coffee gift baskets and included a card saying “Have a great time at the bachelor party…but not too great of a time.”
Our wedding day is right around the corner and I am so thankful to be marrying such an understanding woman!
